Mattress protectors and bed pads: what does each one do?

They both help protect your bed, but they do different jobs. Here is a short guide to the difference, and how to decide what you need.

Mattress protectors and bed pads: what does each one do?

When you are choosing protection for a bed, it is easy to treat mattress protectors and bed pads as interchangeable. The useful distinction is simple: a waterproof protector provides a barrier for the mattress, while an absorbent bed pad collects liquid over a particular area.

A mattress protector provides a barrier

A waterproof mattress protector is designed to help stop liquid reaching the mattress. Depending on its design, it may fit over the sleeping surface or enclose the mattress. Waterproofing alone does not mean a product absorbs liquid, so check the description rather than assuming it works like a pad.

A bed pad adds absorbency where you need it

An absorbent bed pad protects a selected area of the bed. Pulp’s disposable pads combine an absorbent core with waterproof backing, helping collect accidental leaks and protect the surface underneath. The dimensions tell you how much area the pad covers; its listed absorbency is a separate specification.

Can you use both?

A bed pad and a waterproof mattress protector can form part of the same bedding setup. The protector provides a wider barrier, while the pad adds absorbency in the area you want to protect. Follow each product’s positioning and care instructions, and remember that no setup guarantees leak-free use.

Start with the area you want to protect

Measure first. A smaller pad may suit a focused area, while a larger pad gives you more surface coverage. Pulp’s disposable range includes 60x40cm, 60x60cm, 90x60cm and 160x80cm. Choose a format that fits your bed and routine, rather than relying on labels such as large or extra large.

The two products serve different purposes, so the choice does not have to be one or the other. Think about mattress coverage and liquid absorption separately, then compare the product details.
